Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, involves the removal of excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and to alleviate discomfort.

The surgery is designed to alleviate neck, back, and shoulder pain, skin irritation beneath the breasts, deep grooves from bra straps, and restricted physical activity due to the size of the breasts.

Incisions required for the surgery will result in scars, which tend to fade significantly over time but are permanent. With our preferred technique the aesthetic shape of the breast and chest contour is improved through liposuction, which also limits the length and number of scars.

Yes it is. In our most requested technique (and in those featured in our gallery), liposuction is required to contour the chest wall as the breast footprint moves up the chest – allowing for a significant lift of the breast and improved aesthetic.  Liposuction is not covered by OHIP and that portion is self pay when this technique is chosen.

Changes in nipple sensation do  occur, with nipples potentially becoming less or more sensitive after the procedure.

Breast reduction surgery does not change the risk of developing breast cancer. However, up-to-date mammograms are recommended before surgery, especially for women over the age of 40 or those with a strong family history of breast cancer.

While the goal is to improve symmetry, some natural differences between the breasts will remain post-surgery. To measure volume differences of your breasts, you can use a technique based on Archimedes’ principle of water displacement to pre-determine the volume difference, aiding in achieving more consistent results.

Ideal candidates experience physical discomfort from large breasts, are non-smokers in good health, have realistic expectations, and are motivated by personal desire, among other factors.

Recovery varies but generally includes initial rest and limited activity, with a return to light activities after a few weeks. Most patients return to work between 4 and 8 weeks after surgery with some as early as 2 weeks after surgery.  Final swelling resolves 6 months after surgery.

Depending on the nature of your work and your individual healing process, you may return to work within 2 weeks of surgery. Most commonly a return to work is between 4 and 8 weeks after surgery.

Post-operative care involves wearing a supportive bra without underwriting, managing discomfort with medication, and attending follow-up appointments. Scar care and gradual reintroduction to physical activities are also important.
