Why Choose Male Blepharoplasty?
Male blepharoplasty can rejuvenate your appearance by addressing problems often unique to men. This specialized procedure reverses the signs of aging around the eyes, giving the eye area a fresher appearance. Here’s why it stands out as a choice for men:
- Customized for Male Aesthetics: The procedure considers men’s distinct facial structure and aesthetic goals, ensuring masculine and natural results.
- Fast recovery time: Compared to more invasive surgeries, male blepharoplasty usually allows for a quicker return to daily activities, making it ideal for busy lifestyles.
- Boosts Confidence: A more alert and youthful appearance can significantly improve self-esteem and confidence in professional and social contexts.
- Long-Lasting Results: This procedure offers a permanent solution to remove excess skin and fat, ensuring that the results will improve and maintain your appearance as you age.
How is Male Blepharoplasty Different Than Blepharoplasty in Women?
Male blepharoplasty differs from blepharoplasty in women in several ways due to variations in facial anatomy, aesthetic goals, and surgical techniques tailored to each gender.
- Skin and Brow Position: Men have thicker skin and naturally lower eyebrows. Treatments are designed to accommodate these differences to ensure healing and maintain masculine characteristics.
- Subtle Enhancements: The focus is on subtle, natural-looking improvements that refresh the appearance without drastically altering facial characteristics, avoiding an overdone look.
- Recovery Considerations: Because men have thicker skin and stronger facial muscles, recovery strategies can be adjusted to suit their specific healing processes.
- Technique Adjustments: Surgical techniques can vary to maintain the angularity and definition characteristic of the male face, emphasizing a conservative approach to removing or repositioning skin and fat.
Who is a Male Blepharoplasty Candidate?
Candidates for male blepharoplasty are typically men seeking to address aesthetic or functional problems associated with the eyelids and the surrounding area. Ideal candidates often have several common challenges and characteristics:
- Excess Upper Eyelid Skin: Men who suffer from excess skin on their upper eyelids often discover that it makes them look older or exhausted and can even impair their vision, hindering daily activities.
- Under-Eye Bags and Puffiness: Regardless of how rested a man feels, persistent puffiness or bags under the eyes can make him appear older than he is.
- Patients Seeking Revisions: This procedure is also suitable for people wishing to correct or improve the results of previous eyelid surgery, especially if they have had negative results or complications.
- Deep Wrinkles or Creases: Deep wrinkles or creases around the eyes, caused by aging or environmental factors, can detract from a youthful facial appearance and contribute to a stern or unfriendly expression.

How Male Blepharoplasty Restored Patient’s Vision
-
Background
A man in his 60s was dealing with severe eyelid ptosis, which made it increasingly difficult for him to keep his eyes open. In addition to this functional issue, he also had noticeable lower eyelid bags that he wanted to improve. -
Concerns and Goals
His main concern was that his drooping upper eyelids were obstructing his vision and interfering with his daily life. He also hoped to reduce the puffiness and tired look caused by the prominent bags under his eyes. -
Procedure Details
To address both functional and cosmetic issues, he had surgery on both his upper and lower eyelids, along with ptosis correction using levator muscle advancement to improve eyelid movement. Later, a Fasanella-Servat procedure was performed on the left eyelid to improve symmetry between both eyes. -
Results and Feedback
After surgery, he was very happy to regain full eyelid function, which significantly enhanced his quality of life.
From Tired-Looking to Bright-Eyed
-
Background
This gentleman came to us with very heavy drooping in both his brows and upper eyelids. It gave him a tired, weighed-down look, even when he felt wide awake. -
Concerns and Goals
He wanted to lift the brows and eyelids enough to open up the eyes, but in a subtle, natural way. -
Procedure Details
We performed a direct brow lift, along with upper and lower eyelid surgery. This combination helped lift and shape the brow, remove the extra skin from the upper lids, and smooth out the lower lid area. -
Results and Feedback
These after photos were taken just three weeks after surgery, so there’s still a bit of swelling, but even now, you can really see the difference. His eyes look more open, the incisions are already healing nicely, and he has a much more energized appearance.
Stages of the Male Blepharoplasty Process
Goal Setting and Assessment
This first step involves a detailed discussion about your aesthetic goals, an evaluation of your eyelids, and an assessment to ensure you're a suitable candidate for male blepharoplasty.
Medical Instructions
You may undergo medical evaluations to assess your overall health. Dr. McRae will provide specific instructions on preparing for surgery.
Anesthesia
Male blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and your comfort level.
Surgical Execution
Dr. McRae cuts away extra skin, tightens muscles, and removes fat to improve the appearance of your eyelids. Usually, these incisions are made inside the lower eyelid or in the natural creases of your eyelids.
Immediate Post-Operative Care
After the procedure, you will remain in the recovery area for some time. Swelling and bruising are possible. Post-operative care instructions will be given to assist with recovery and manage discomfort.
Recovery and Follow-Up
During the healing phase, you should rest and follow post-operative care instructions. You should also schedule follow-up appointments with Dr. McRae to monitor your recovery and treatment outcome.
How to Prepare for a Male Blepharoplasty
Preparing for a male blepharoplasty involves several key steps to ensure the best possible outcome and a smooth recovery. Here’s how to get ready for your eyelid surgery:
-
Consultation with a Surgeon
Be clear about your aesthetic goals, and discuss any medical conditions with your surgeon to customize the procedure to your needs. -
Medical Evaluation and Tests
To determine whether you are fit for surgery, undergo a thorough medical examination. Laboratory testing and vision testing may be part of this.
-
Medication Review
Inform Dr. McRae about all medications, supplements, and vitamins you’re taking. You may need to adjust these, especially if they could affect bleeding or healing.
-
Stop Smoking and Alcohol Consumption
Quit smoking and reduce alcohol consumption at least 4 to 6 weeks before surgery and continue to do so after surgery to improve healing and reduce complications. -
Fasting
Follow Dr. McRae's instructions on fasting, usually no eating or drinking after midnight before your surgery.
Aftercare Instructions for Male Blepharoplasty
After your male blepharoplasty, following specific aftercare instructions is crucial for a smooth recovery and achieving the best results. Here are guidelines to ensure a successful healing process:
-
Elevate Your Head
Sleep with your head elevated above your heart for the first few days to reduce swelling. -
Medication Adherence
Take prescribed medications, including antibiotics and pain relievers, exactly as directed to manage pain and prevent infection. -
Clean Gently
Follow Dr. McRae's instructions for safely cleaning the eye area without disturbing the healing tissues. -
Quit Smoking
Smoking can interfere with the healing process. If you smoke, it is recommended that you quit or significantly reduce smoking before and after surgery. -
Restrict Activities
For a few weeks, refrain from hard exercises and exercise to avoid difficulties. -
Cold Compresses
Carefully use cold compresses to reduce puffiness around the eyes; do not press directly on the eyelids. -
Keep Follow-Up Appointments
To make sure your eyes are recovering properly, show up for all post-operative appointments.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as eyelid lift surgery, is a cosmetic procedure aimed at modifying the upper or lower eyelids. The surgery is intended to correct anatomy that contributes to aging around the eyes such as skin, fat, glands, ligaments, and muscles. This results in rejuvenating the area around the eyes.
Who are the ideal candidates for male blepharoplasty surgery?
How does Male Blepharoplasty differ from regular Blepharoplasty?
While the basic surgical principles remain the same, Male Blepharoplasty is specifically tailored to maintain and enhance the masculine contours of the eyelid and surrounding areas. Men’s eyelids have distinct characteristics, such as thicker skin and more pronounced brow lines, which require careful consideration during surgery to achieve natural, masculine-looking results.
How do Dr. Mark McRae and Dr. Matthew McRae personalize eyelid surgery?
Drs. McRae personalize eyelid surgery by evaluating factors such as the patient’s skin type, eyelid structure, fat distribution, orbital and cheeks bone position, brow position and muscle tone, and baseline asymmetry. They consider individual anatomical and aesthetic aspects, including the distinctive features of particular ethnicities, to customize the surgical plan for each patient.
What should I expect during the recovery period?
During recovery, patients can typically make public appearances within 1- 2 weeks. Most light activities can be resumed within a week. Lower blepharoplasty may result in more pronounced swelling or bruising, and final swelling may take several months to completely resolve.
Are there any risks associated with eyelid lift surgery?
Like any surgical procedure, blepharoplasty carries potential risks, including but not limited to bleeding, infection, or difficulties with eyelid function. Dr. McRae employs meticulous techniques to minimize these risks and has the expertise to manage any complications that may arise. Patients are recommended to have had their eyes checked within a year of pursuing blepharoplasty surgery.
What anesthesia options are available for blepharoplasty?
For upper eyelid surgery, local anesthesia is commonly used. For lower eyelid surgery local anesthesia can also be performed but more commonly patients choose local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. The choice depends on patient comfort and the complexity of the surgery and is administered by a board certified anesthesiologist.
How long do the results of an eyelid lift last?
The improvements from blepharoplasty are typically long-lasting. Although the procedure cannot stop the aging process, it can significantly enhance the appearance of the eyelids for an extended period.
Can blepharoplasty be combined with other procedures?
Blepharoplasty can be performed in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as a brow lift, or facelift depending on the individual’s aesthetic goals and facial anatomy. Dr. McRae will discuss which combination of procedures may offer the best outcome.
Will there be noticeable scarring after blepharoplasty?
Incisions made during blepharoplasty are designed to be discreet and are often concealed within the natural creases of the eyelids, making any resulting scars less noticeable once fully healed.
