Providing excellence in patient care involves a multi-faceted approach that extends beyond the surgical procedure itself. At McRae Plastic Surgery, we believe in fully equipping our patients with the essential knowledge needed for a smooth preoperative and postoperative experience. Below, you will find detailed guidelines tailored to help you prepare for and recover from your surgical journey.
Preoperative Instructions
Health Changes: Notify our office immediately if you experience any health changes such as a cough, cold, or flu within the week leading up to your surgery.
Blood Thinners: Cease all blood thinner medications two weeks prior to surgery. This includes Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Advil, Coumadin, Warfarin, and Plavix.
Supplements: Discontinue Vitamin E and other supplements like omega-3, fish oil, ginko, garlic, ginseng, flax oil, St. John’s wort, and echinacea two weeks before surgery.
Alcohol and Smoking: Abstain from alcohol and tobacco products, including nicotine patches and gum, four weeks before and after surgery.
Pre-Surgical Hygiene: Shower or bathe the night before and the morning of your surgery. Avoid using lotions or creams 24 hours before the procedure.
Fasting: Do not eat or drink anything, including water, past midnight the night before your surgery.
Attire and Personal Items: Opt for comfortable clothing and leave valuables at home. If undergoing breast surgery, consult McRae Plastic Surgery about bringing a comfortable sports bra.
Companionship: Ensure a relative or friend stays with you the first night post-surgery.
Diet and Supplements: A diet rich in protein, Vitamin C, and Zinc can aid in healing.
Pain Management: Use Acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) as directed for pain. If stronger medication has been prescribed, adhere strictly to the guidelines.
Physical Restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting and exercise for a minimum of two weeks post-surgery.
Post-Anesthetic Precautions: Avoid driving or performing tasks requiring coordination for at least 24 hours following anesthesia.
Hygiene: After your initial post-operative appointment, you may resume daily bathing. If steri-strips are in place, gently pat them dry after showering.
